Activities aplenty in Algorfa: Golf, Bowls, Beaches, Hiking...
With La Finca, one of Spain's most talked about golf courses on its doorstep, golf has to be both Algorfa's biggest activity. If you prefer to lounge in sand, rather than chip yourself out of it, there are several Blue Flag beaches bathing in the Mediterranean's waters only a short drive east of town. Most of these stretches of sand are perfect for water sports. For those interested in a little inland nature, there's an interesting nature reserve nearby that's perfect for walking, bicycling and horseback riding. Rest assured, your daily activities will be as varied as they are enjoyable.
Golf
With all 6032 yards of La Finca outside your front door, you'd better give your handicap a hug and say a kind word goodbye - you won't be seeing it much longer! There are also several more quality courses nearby, namely Villamartin, Las Ramblas, Campoamor and La Marquesa.
Bowls
If you prefer your balls large and close at hand (oh, and like a laugh and a friendly social scene), there are four bowls clubs in nearby Torrevieja: La Siesta Bowls Club, Emerald Isle Bowls Club, San Luis Bowling Club and San Miguel Bowls Club are all as welcoming as bowls is fun
Beaches
The stretch of Mediterranean shore within 20 minutes of Algorfa is littered with quality beaches, several of them flying the prestigious Blue Flags. Around Torrevieja alone there are four Blue Flag beaches: Playa de los Locos, Playa del Cura, Playa de la Mata and Playa de los Náufragos. Each of them offers clean golden sands, seafront promenades, information offices, parking, bus access and oodles of other facilities (only Playa de la Mata lacks moored swimming platforms).
The shore along Guardamar del Segura, also accessible in 20 minutes from Algorfa, hosts two more Blue Flag beaches: La Roqueta and Playa Centro. Although lacking a Blue Flag (only because it's undeveloped), Guardamar's Playa Vivers is the most beautiful and peaceful beach in this neck of the woods. It's more than 2km long, hosts stunning sands and is backed by dramatic dunes dotted with pines, palms and eucalyptus (picnic anyone?)
Torrevieja and La Mata National Nature Reserve
En route to the coast, some 10 minutes from Algorfa, are two famous salt-water lagoons that now comprise a 3700 hectare nature reserve. The two lagoons have been used since Roman time to mine precious salt. Although production is lower today than it was in the 19th and 20th centuries, Torrevieja's port continues to ship one million tonnes of the salty stuff around the world each year.
Over 200 bird species have been identified in the nature reserve, including flamingos. Besides bird watching, the nature reserve is an excellent place for walking, cycling or horseback riding. Seeing that the area reserve is a salt flat, you don't have to worry about any hills!
La Pedrera
This park, between Algorfa and nearby Orihuela, hosts mountain bike trails and walking paths that meander through some 30,000 pine trees. There are also camping areas, barbeque pits and two swimming pools. You'll find La Pedrere 2km east of the village Bigastro.
La Hoya Sports Complex, Torrevieja
This facility, which is within 15 minutes of Algorfa, boasts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, gymnasium, tennis courts, pelota courts, petanca areas and bowling surfaces. The covered pavilion is used for handball, basketball, roller hockey, volleyball and even five-a-side football. There's even a physiotherapy clinic and sauna incorporated.
Nightlife
While Algorfa is rather quiet in the evenings, nearby Torrevieja (15 minutes by taxi) is heaving with options. Have a cocktail at an after hour bar on Avenida de las Habaneras or wade into the numerous discotheques that reverberate and heave until 5am. They're found along Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, Avenida Delfina and at the Ozone leisure complex.
