History of Algorfa, Alicante

Like much of the Alicante province, Algorfa fell under the rule of the Moors in the 8th century AD. The Muslim reign lasted until the 13th century when King Jaime I recaptured Alicante and the surrounding area and made it part of his newly created Kingdom of Valencia. Algorfa was eventually established as a municipality in 1328 by Alfonso II.

Algorfa remained part of the Kingdom of Valencia until 1714, when the decree at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession stripped Valencia of its fueros (its autonomous privileges). At that point, Algorfa lost its municipal rights and fell into Felipe V's Kingdom of Spain.

However, in 1790 Carlos V returned Algorfa to its previous stature at the request of Isabel Ruiz Dávalos, the Marquesses of Algorfa. By that time, Algorfa was an extensive agricultural community with its own parish (granted in 1755).

Oddly today, the village of Algorfa now falls into two municipalities. One side belongs to the municipality of Almoradí while the other belongs to Algorfa.
